Full job description
Star Throwers is a registered charity dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families. Established in December 2008, we have helped over 5,000 people affected by cancer, offering services free of charge. We provide evidence-based information, support and wellbeing services to people at any stage of their cancer journey, as well as to families and carers of those affected by cancer.
We are seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Cancer Information and Support Nurse to join our team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in assisting individuals recently diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or living beyond cancer. You will provide timely, trusted, and evidence-based information, facilitate debriefing sessions, translate complex medical information, and tailor support to each service user’s needs.
We are looking for someone who is a registered nurse with a strong clinical background in oncology, who demonstrates a professional manner and a warm, empathetic approach to supporting individuals affected by cancer.
The ideal candidate will possess evidence of post-graduate study within oncology and have completed adult safeguarding training. Experience in communicating and interpreting complex and distressing information to patients is essential, as is a proven track record of working within an acute hospital clinical setting with cancer patients. You should be resilient in managing emotionally sensitive situations and committed to ongoing independent learning to further develop your cancer knowledge.
You will have facilitated events, groups, or educational sessions and contributed to service development. We value excellent interpersonal skills and IT and social media literacy, as these are critical for delivering trusted, evidence-based information and support to our service users. The ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and autonomously as a practitioner is required, along with a positive, proactive attitude and the capacity to manage change effectively.
Desirable qualities include additional oncology education, advanced communication skills, experience in managing or supporting volunteers, and previous involvement in teaching or audit activities. Experience in palliative care, knowledge of the community and voluntary sector, data collection skills, and confidence in presenting to groups of staff or patients would further strengthen your application.
All criteria will be assessed as part of our interview and selection process.
