Star Throwers Job Description: Cancer Information Nurse


Responsible to: Lead Clinician/Coordinator

Salary: £16-£18 per hour (dependent on experience)

Part time: 9am – 4.30pm, 2 days per week.

Star Throwers is a local cancer support charity based in Wymondham, Norfolk dedicated to supporting people with cancer and their carers, from diagnosis through to life after cancer. Star Throwers provides an individually focused support service for cancer patients and their carers.

We help to empower people to take control of their cancer journey by helping them to become well-informed about their cancer and all of their treatment options – including clinical trials. We also support people with the effects of their cancer and cancer treatments through our holistic wellbeing support, including complementary therapies, nutrition talks and advice, lymphoedema support, gentle exercise groups, counselling, writing therapy and support groups.

Job Specifications:

Duties of this role include working with the Lead Clinician/Coordinator to deliver our information and support to service users and their carers at any stage of a cancer diagnosis.

Essential Qualifications: NMC Adult Registered Nurse

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting service users when they have received a cancer diagnosis providing information from sources that are trusted and credible that help our users understand their disease and it’s impacts.
  • Debriefing users following any consultation, treatment or investigation or service to ensure they have the opportunity to ask questions and gain clarity on any aspect of their diagnosis or treatment plan.
  • Communicating relevant information about appointments and tests to service users.
  • Identifying areas where service users have issues or require guidance to help them manage their disease and treatments and to alleviate their concerns.
  • Identifying activities using holistic needs assessment to help tailor care and support that Star Throwers provides to meet their needs.
  • Researching and analysing cancer data from multiple different sources such as studies and journals.
  • Reviewing medical notes and translating them to language that can be understood by our clients.

 Person Specification (Essential):

  • Knowledge of cancer pathways including oncology treatments and its impacts on those affected by it.
  • Commitment to independent learning in order to develop personal cancer knowledge.
  • A keen interest in keeping up to date with cancer research and innovation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a team member and also as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Good record keeping skills to ensure all relevant documentation is collated and completed prior to and following each consultation.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Caldecott Principles.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)

Responsible to: Operations & Fundraising Manager

Salary: £9.12 per hour

Part time: 16-17 hours per week (exact days and hours to be agreed with applicant, likely to be over 2-3 days)

Job Summary:

Star Throwers is seeking an Administrator to manage the front-of-house, supervise volunteers and handle duties for the management team. We are looking for an individual who is efficient and comfortable being a member of a team with the ability to multi-task. The ideal candidate for this job is resourceful, a good problem solver and organised.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day administration of the front desk, to include: booking appointments, volunteer management, meeting & greeting visitors etc
  • Streamline and make improvements to current processes and systems and continually monitor effectiveness and performance
  • Assist in training existing volunteers and hiring new volunteers
  • Implement and monitor activities as directed by the management team, and see the activities through to completion
  • Maintain office supplies by checking inventory and order items
  • Respond to questions and requests for information about the Charity’s services
  • Answer incoming calls and assume other receptionist duties when needed
  • Support the financial procedures of the Charity
  • Support the fundraising and events of the Charity as needed

 Person Specification (Desirable):

  • Experience in a customer service role. Ideally some of this experience would be from the not for profit sector
  • Awareness of Data Protection issues and the ability to work with confidential and sensitive information
  • Experience using booking systems
  • Experience of using finance systems
  • Ability to analyse and revise operating practices to improve efficiency
  • Excellent organisation skills and dedication to completing projects in a timely manner
  • Good attention to detail and high levels of accuracy
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Excellent customer service skills
