On Sunday 2ndJune we celebrated the amazing efforts of our many volunteers as part of the national Volunteers’ Week 2019. Over 60 volunteers and their families came along to enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea in the beautiful surroundings of the Star Throwers garden.
Star Throwers volunteers have been essential to supporting the running of the Star Throwers centre, shops and events since the charity was founded 10 years ago. The event was organised to recognise the amazing work volunteers do to support the running of the charity. In 2018 alone the charity office, therapist, shop and fundraising volunteers donated over 6,000 hours to support over 250 people affected by cancer. Since its foundation in 2009 the charity has supported over 2,000 people with free cancer information sessions, complementary therapies, nutrition advice, lymphoedema support and group workshops.
Carol and Mary volunteer at the Star Throwers centre: “Tuesday mornings at Star Throwers are always special for us, meeting people to share a little time with them and hopefully seeing them leave uplifted after their visit”.
Shelly volunteers as a therapist at Star Throwers: “I feel honoured and privileged to offer my complementary therapies to patients and their loved ones at Star Throwers. Its wonderful to put something back into the community.”
The afternoon tea was kindly sponsored by Kerry Foods Ltd who recently visited the centre to learn about how the charity is vitally important to individuals and families faced with a cancer diagnosis. The wonderful food was provided by local company, ‘Laura’s Afternoon Tea’ who deliver ready-made afternoon teas.
