After a heavy storm, a boy walked along the beach throwing the stranded starfish back into the sea.

A man watching shouted "there are too many of them - it won’t make any difference."

As the boy threw another starfish back into the sea, he smiled and replied "it made a difference to that one!"

Adjoining the lounge, is a general office area where appointments are booked on the computer, telephone calls are taken and general enquiries dealt with.

Doctors Consulting Room

Doctor Consultations

We offer FREE consultations with our compassionate Oncologist and Nurse for anyone who would like to discuss their current treatment and treatment options, or has any worries, concerns or questions regarding their diagnosis, treatment and future. We will always make time for you to ask all the questions you have, and promise to answer back in plain non-jargon language.

All the advice on treatments are based on scientific evidence which is made available to anyone under care requesting it.

Complementary Therapy Room

Complementary Therapies Room

At Star Throwers we provide a wide range of complementary therapies, such as Massage, Reflexology, Acupuncture, Reiki, Hypnotherapy, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD). These are for cancer patients but also carers, whose needs are often unaddressed. All of our therapists are experienced, qualified, insured, and DBS checked.

There is usually a complementary therapist on the premises every day, but availability of each individual therapy may vary. Prior to accessing the complementary therapies that we offer we do ask that you make an appointment to see our Doctor first. This is to ensure that any therapies you may have will not be detrimental to your condition.

Teaching/Study/Meeting Room

Yoga/Pilates/Talks/Workshops

On Wednesday afternoons we hold PILATES classes, a therapeutic form of exercise in a friendly small group that strengthens core muscles. Suitable for all fitness levels - classes will be tailored to your ability.

On Thursdays mornings we hold YOGA classes, a therapeutic form of exercise that also focuses on learning techniques to relax and deal with stress within a small friendly group. Suitable for all fitness levels - classes will be tailored to your ability.

On Wednesday mornings we also hold TALKS to raise awareness of the fundementals of cancer and cancer treatments, as well as strategies for preventing cancer. Anyone is welcome, but please ring before to register your interest.

counselling

Counselling and Therapeutic Writing

We have a qualified and experienced counsellor for one to one sessions, available for patients and carers. We also have an ex-macmillan nurse volunteer who is available for you to chat to.

On Thursday mornings we host a THERAPEUTIC WRITING GROUP. This will be an opportunity to take part in a small group to write with a therapeutic purpose in a safe, holding environment. Therapeutic writing is different to creative writing in that it is not the finished item that is focussed on but on the actual process of writing words onto the page. Writing is something you can do for yourself whenever you wish and you may find that coming to the group not only improves how you feel but gives you a new interest.

Resting Bedrooms

ShowerBedrooms

Our bright, cheery bedrooms are equipped with two single beds, which has a pressure mattress. This is particularly good for anyone suffering with pressure sores as this inflatable mattress has individual cells, which inflate and deflate alternately. If anyone using the centre feels tired or is unwell during their visit, they are very welcome to use the bedroom. There is an en suite, walk-in shower room, which is available for use by any of our less mobile visitors who may have difficulty at home with bathroom facilities.

Kitchen/Diner

Kitchen/Diner

Our bright and airy kitchen/diner acts as a second lounge where people can gather together. We offer FREE refreshments, with standard and more health conscious choices. A large dining table to seat up to 10 people is used by staff and visitors.

We also hold cooking demonstrations here based on the meditteranean diet, which has evidence that suggests it helps prevent a variety of health issues.

In this room we also have our growing library of books, CDs, and DVDs related to cancer and health. There is no charge to loan these books, and loans are valid for 8 weeks.
